Summary: The amicus curiae, a Latin expression that defines itself as a friend of the court, is a written report that can be presented by a natural or legal person; is a procedural tool that allows third parties who are not part of a legal dispute, to defend interests of general importance, such as when the defense of fundamental rights is at stake. The amicus curiae was related to environmental causes, since El Salvador was the headquarters and part of a current contest and of great impact in terms of International Procedural Law. The mining company Pac Rim Cayman LLC (formerly Pac Rim Mining Corp) sued the Salvadoran State for more than $ 300 million before the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). permits for mining exploration in a northern area of the country called El Dorado; but before requesting the State change of nationality to be able to support the CAFTA-DR treaty. Two amicus curiae were presented to ICSID, which specified the water and environmental circumstances of El Salvador and the risks it was causing for the population and the environment. In this way, the primary objective is to analyze the amicus curiae in its empirical application, and how the institution helped to change the laws on Mining in El Salvador.
